KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Continuous rain in Perak this afternoon caused flooding, with several houses in Taman Aman Sejahtera and Taman Desa Aman 1 in Titi Serong, Kerian inundated.
Kerian District Officer and District Disaster Management Committee chairman Saidi Shaari said that following monitoring and discussions with agencies at the Parit Buntar Penghulu's Office, a temporary evacuation centre (PPS) was opened at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Titi Serong.
“Flood victims from the affected areas will be moved to the SK Titi Serong PPS from 5 pm. However, the actual number of victims involved has yet to be determined,” he said in a statement.
In KEDAH, the flood situation is gradually improving, with only one PPS still operating as of 4 pm today following improving weather conditions.
The Kedah State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said three PPS in the Yan district that had been opened since last Sunday and Monday — SK Teroi, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Pei Eng and Dewan Lestari Guar Chempedak — were fully closed at noon today.
As such, the only active PPS is Dewan Pejabat Penghulu Mukim Bukit Raya in the Pendang district, which is sheltering 25 victims from eight families this afternoon, compared with 152 victims from 65 families in the morning.
All the victims at the centre are residents of Kampung Pulai and Kampung Senggora.
In PERLIS, the state Civil Defence Force spokesperson said the number of flood victims from Kampung Telok who were moved to Dewan Batu 5, Kangar, had fallen to nine from three families as of 6 pm today, compared with 13 victims from six families in the morning.
The hall, which was opened at 1.50 am last Monday, is being used as a temporary transit shelter, and no PPS has officially been opened in the state so far.
In PENANG, more than six hours of heavy rain from 4 am today caused flash floods at several locations, including Taman Kota Permai, Jalan Baru, Jalan Bukit Minyak, Bandar Cassia and Bukit Mertajam, but no victims were evacuated.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said a 75-year-old woman was rescued after being trapped at her home in Taman Kota Permai when water levels rose to about 0.3 metres.
He said the department received an emergency call at 8.13 am and immediately launched a rescue operation, although the movement of its vehicles was slightly hampered by traffic congestion.
“The victim was safely evacuated without any injuries, and further monitoring found that the water level was gradually receding before the operation was fully concluded at 11.42 am,” he said.
