ISTANBUL, Oct 28 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- All 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed as a mark of respect after at least 64 people were killed in a train crash near Madrid, Anadolu Ajansi reported, citing BBC Sport on Wednesday.
More than 500 passengers were travelling on the trains when they collided and derailed near the city of Toledo, according to authorities.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said the decision to suspend the matches was made in solidarity with the victims of the accident.
Five La Liga teams — Levante, Alaves, Valencia, Celta Vigo and Real Betis — were scheduled to play in the first round on Wednesday.
Spanish giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will enter the competition in the round of 32.
Barcelona expressed its “deepest condolences” to the victims and solidarity with their families and those injured.
Real Madrid also expressed its condolences and offered its “full support” to emergency services and those involved in rescue efforts.
Thursday’s scheduled matches remain unaffected.
The RFEF has not yet announced a revised schedule for the postponed Wednesday matches.
