MTL: Johor Identifies 337 Hotspot Locations, 67 High-risk Roads - Exco

JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The Johor state government has identified 337 flood hotspot locations and 67 high-risk roads throughout the state, in preparation for the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) 2026/2027.

State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said that in this regard, coordination with the Public Works Department, the Irrigation and Drainage Department, local authorities, district offices, and related agencies is given attention to ensure that actions can be implemented in an integrated manner.

He said that his team is taking proactive steps to strengthen preparedness to reduce flood risks by considering geographical conditions, river systems, catchment areas, existing infrastructure, and past flood incident records.

According to him, the Muar district recorded the highest number of hotspot locations at 65, followed by Johor Bahru (44), Batu Pahat (41), Kota Tinggi (35), Tangkak (26), Mersing (22), Pontian (19), Kluang and Segamat each (29) and Kulai (27).

"Our priority is to ensure that these areas receive early attention, particularly involving roads, bridges, drainage systems, main drainage, and settlements that are potentially affected by continuous heavy rain," he said in a statement today.

Mohamad Fazli said that 67 high-risk locations on federal and state roads have also been identified, involving three districts: 30 in Kota Tinggi, Batu Pahat (21) and Segamat (16).

He said the reported preparations included road surface maintenance work worth RM11.79 million, non-surface work worth RM3.20 million, and MARRIS (Malaysian Road Records Information System) allocation of RM1.92 million for drainage-related work in Batu Pahat.

In addition, initiatives include hotspot mapping, 'eBencana' reporting, and various flood mitigation projects such as Phase 1 of the Sungai Johor Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB), the Sungai Pemandi RTB, and a flood alleviation project in Kampung Sungai Kapal Lama, Pengerang, in the Kota Tinggi district.

"At the same time, we urge the public to remain vigilant, stay updated with official weather warnings, and adhere to safety instructions, especially when encountering routes that have been submerged by floodwaters," he added.
