Vultr To Build 20MW AI Supercluster In India’s Chennai

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- Vultr, a privately-held cloud infrastructure company, will deploy AMD Instinct MI355X graphics processing units (GPUs) in a new 20-megawatt (MW) artificial intelligence (AI) supercluster in Chennai, India.

Vultr said the deployment will be India’s largest, using AMD Instinct GPUs, and together with its flagship supercluster in Springfield, Ohio, will give it two of the world’s largest AMD AI infrastructure deployments.

“Enterprises deploying AI at scale need infrastructure they can access locally to meet data sovereignty, data residency, and latency requirements.

“Vultr’s Chennai supercluster, powered by AMD MI355X GPUs, gives organisations in India the capacity to train, fine-tune, and run inference on in-country infrastructure,” said Vultr Chief Executive Officer, J.J. Kardwell.

The supercluster is designed to serve AI labs, foundation model builders, AI start-ups, enterprises and research institutions, supporting large language model training, fine-tuning and high-volume inference, Vultr said in a statement.

It will also use AMD’s ROCm open software ecosystem, giving developers access to widely used AI frameworks, libraries and models.

“Through our collaboration with Vultr, we are expanding access to AMD Instinct compute in India,” said AMD India Country Head & Senior Vice President Engineering, Jaya Jagadish.

Vultr plans to add significant capacity in 2027, including AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs and AMD Helios rack-scale AI system.

The deployment comes as demand for sovereign cloud infrastructure rises globally, driven by security concerns, regulatory requirements and performance needs. Vultr operates 34 cloud data centre regions serving customers in 17 countries across six continents.
