KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia aims to strengthen international cooperation in developing smarter, safer and more sustainable road infrastructure through engagements with the International Road Federation (IRF) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

In a Facebook post, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said separate meetings with the two international organisations were held in conjunction with Malaysia’s participation in the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress 2026.

“The meeting with IRF focused specifically on Malaysia’s road safety through audits, as well as opportunities to strengthen cooperation in training, capacity building and sharing of technical expertise,” he said.

Meanwhile, the meeting with UNECE provided Malaysia with opportunities to leverage existing solutions and instruments used globally to evaluate both small- and large-scale projects, including those implemented under public-private partnerships (PPPs).

He said the discussions also covered regulatory aspects, potential technical cooperation and capacity building in road safety, as well as the potential to leverage UNECE’s expertise in the development of intelligent transport systems (ITS) and sustainable, climate-resilient infrastructure.

Nanta said the willingness of both organisations to explore cooperation with Malaysia is expected to strengthen the country’s technical capabilities, thereby improving the quality, safety and resilience of road infrastructure for the well-being of the people.

The ITS World Congress 2026, themed ‘Beyond Mobility, Connected World’ in Gangneung, South Korea, from Oct 19 to 23, brings together about 60,000 participants from 90 countries to discuss innovations and the future direction of intelligent transportation.
