JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- The TNC Cup Chess Championship 2026 has demonstrated the importance of balancing technological advancement with physical interaction in developing the potential of young people and promoting mind sports.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said although internet technology and online platforms provided opportunities to learn and compete at the international level, face-to-face tournaments continued to play an important role.

“The atmosphere of in-person competitions has proven to be far more enjoyable and vibrant, while generating social excitement that cannot be replicated by online platforms,” she said in a statement today.

She said this after officiating the closing ceremony and prize presentation for the championship at IOI Mall Kulai here today.

In support of grassroots development of young talent and mind sports, Teo also announced an allocation of RM10,000 from the Kulai Member of Parliament’s Office to the organisers to support the staging of the championship.

Meanwhile, on cyber threats, Teo, who is also the Kulai Member of Parliament, expressed concern over media reports on the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) by secondary school students to create indecent content.

“Recent media reports are deeply concerning, highlighting the cyber threats arising from the inappropriate use of technology.

“Nevertheless, the internet also offers tremendous benefits. Like any other tool, technology has its advantages and disadvantages. The key lies in how we minimise its negative effects while maximising the benefits it offers,” she said.

The prestigious two-day championship, organised by the Association of Administrative and Professional Officers (PERTISAS) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with CYS Chess Enterprise, attracted 368 participants from various countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Singapore and Australia.
