KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has advised media practitioners to always prioritise accuracy and fairness in their reporting, especially on issues concerning someone's reputation.
He said in the rush to publish, journalists must not abandon the principles of fair reporting, which include seeking clarification from all parties involved.
"When we are too focused on being the first to publish, we might neglect more important elements, namely context, accuracy, and fairness for all parties.
"In any issue, especially those involving reputations, listen to both sides before publishing," he said in a video posted on his official Facebook account today.
Fahmi said he was prompted to address the matter following a recent viral post concerning sporting issues involving national track cycling coach John Beasley and national cyclist Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang.
He stressed that the right of reply and the opportunity to provide an explanation must be given to the parties being reported on.
"We must also emphasise the need for every story to be reported carefully and accurately. Be it through SMS or WhatsApp... if the person does not use WhatsApp, try calling them. Use the human touch; give them space to answer.
"If the party declines to comment, we simply state that appropriately in the report," he said.
Fahmi also took the opportunity to express his admiration and appreciation for the dedication shown by the country's world-class athletes.
"To all national athletes, coaches, and the sports fraternity, thank you for everything you do for Malaysia," he added.
