KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- Selangor state-owned conglomerate, Worldwide Holdings Bhd is positioning itself to develop Malaysia’s first nuclear power plant, aiming to be ready to make a final investment decision (FID) by 2031.
Group chief executive officer Ahmad Zaki Ahmad Zainuddin said the group is identifying a feasible site, assessing suitable technologies and exploring financing options for the project.
“We have started looking into financing for the project. We are also putting together a team to study nuclear technologies and identify the talents needed to support the project from the early planning and development stages through to construction and eventual operations.
“Hopefully, within five years, we will be ready to make the FID for a nuclear plant in Malaysia,” he said.
He told reporters this after participating in a panel discussion session titled ‘Nuclear – Let’s Talk About It!’, moderated by Energy Industries Council regional director, Syed Saggaf Syed Ahmad, at the Selangor International Business Summit 2026 here today.
On opportunities for Malaysian businesses, Ahmad Zaki said existing suppliers to the oil and gas and power generation industries could leverage their technical expertise and industrial capabilities to enter Malaysia's nuclear energy supply chain.
“Vendors in Malaysia, including those partnering with technology providers from overseas, can actually bring value and add value to them,” he said, adding that the nuclear energy project could also create higher-value employment opportunities for Malaysians.
According to Ahmad Zaki, Worldwide Holdings is mandated by the state of Selangor to spearhead the development of its energy and circular economy businesses, alongside other business segments, including property development and medical devices.
In the energy sector, the group operates the 1.4-gigawatt Pulau Indah Power Plant, as well as two small hydropower plants in Batang Kali and Sungai Kerling, and is developing two more in Sungai Pangsun and Sungai Inki.
The group is also undertaking several renewable energy projects, including a 300-megawatt large-scale solar plant in Bestari Jaya, among others, to support Selangor’s green energy agenda.
