ROME, Oct 14 (Bernama-dpa) -- Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer, his medical team at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome said on Tuesday evening, adding that the lower lobe of his right lung was removed during surgery, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
The 71-year-old had a scheduled operation to remove a nodule from his lung on Tuesday, which the Vatican said had gone smoothly.
Subsequent examination confirmed that the nodule was an adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer, the Gemelli medical team said.
The pope had announced his planned surgery on Sunday, saying the nodule had been detected during checks at a "very early stage" and was "well localised."
